Another day of 'science'

Today was a day full of disappointments. Half of the experiments I did didn't work. And next to that I also need to improve all the reports I made for the previous experiments. Just small things like melting point had to be noted in a slightly different way. So there is some work to be done for me tonight.

What I hate most about those days in the lab is that we didn't do any research. We're just only trying to do something that was done by hundreds of people before us and the only thing we need to do is to follow the instructions. It's just like we're making dinner from a recipe.

Science Cafe

Science Cafe was very interesting. A lot of so called experts promoting their way of helping patients to have a better life. Emphasis was clearly on making sure patients had a happier life, and not a longer. Quite a shame then that when the subject of healing illnesses came to speak, the student who was making the enquiry was made ridiculous. Nevertheless I still think that Science Cafe Leiden is a nice opportunity to get to know something about subjects you don't really focus on. Next time the subject will be 'Spelling'.

Ancient Babylon

Another Google Video today. It's a documentairy made by Discovery Civilizations. Always wanted to know what the first real civilization was? Check out this video and see if it was Babylon.

Removal and Science Cafe

Moving the stuff in the old CDL room was really easy. We were done moving things at 10.30, but after moving the next problem appeared: no Internet. Because of the strict security on the university network our computers will not work until the outlet numbers are correctly entered in the database by the help desk. And until now no such thing happened, so the computers in our new room are still quite useless.

Tonight I'll be going to the second edition of Science Cafe Leiden. That's a debate about science in a cafe in downtown Leiden. Tonight's edition will be about alternative ways of healing people. Is this a waste of time and money, or are we spending to less attention to it.

Free Information

Would it be wise to have a free flow of information available for everyone? I don't think so, it could bring along a lot of innovations, but it could also cause a lot of misery if people who don't understand things on a higher level are given access. This is why I believe that information shouldn't be out in the open. Keeping the latest technology and insights secret will help mankind to be able to adapt to it, when the controllers of information slowly inform people about its possibility's.
Back in the ancient time the intellectual leaders had a way to keep the secrets of banking, engineering, medicine and metallurgy in different 'occult' groups. This way only a fraction of the population knew how to construct buildings and infrastructure. When an order was giving to build a building one could be sure of it being of the highest quality.
So, why should we encourage a free flow of information. In my opinion it could only cause a decrease in reliability and quality of information usage.

Moving to a new room

Tomorrow we'll be moving the 'office' of "Chemisch Dispuut Leiden". The new location will be in the same hallway. I and my fellow board members aren't very happy with this removal, because it's the second one in a year time. But as we were told, it's all for a large improvement in the way we can entertain ourselves and our guest. In the rooms that now houses our office and those of our colleges will come a state of the art Faculty Room. Let's hope for the best. The picture I've added is showing the old office in it's full glory.

Denial of Evolution

When I was looking on Google Video for more interesting video's I came across this one. It's really astonishing to see how this group of Christian Americans use false "scientific" evidence against the Theory of Evolution. Have a look and shiver.

Anno 1906

I have written this text some weeks ago, just before the elections in the Netherlands. It's purpose was to make people start thinking about some social and moral problems.

Het is het jaar den Heere 1906. Juist na de eeuwwisseling is Japan van mening dat het verdrag van Portsmouth te weinig onderstreept dat Japan de winnaar is van de Japans-Russische oorlog, de oktober revolutie heeft nog niet plaats gevonden. Geen van de twee Wereld Oorlogen is uitgevochten, maar het zijn wel militair spannende tijden waarin de Koninklijke Nederlandsche Marine zijn eerste onderzeeboot in dienst neemt. Zelfs is dit het jaar waarin de Utrechtsche afdeling van SSR zijn stichting vond als zwaar gereformeerde studentenvereniging.

Naast deze gebeurtenissen stond de chemische wetenschap, als we erop terugkijken, nog in de kinderschoenen. Wat is er mooier voor de echte chemicus dan in deze tijd geleefd te hebben vraag ik me dan af? Als onderzoeker kan je alle kanten op, sluit je je aan bij de Duitsche chemische bedrijven, ga je naar Rusland of blijf je in Nederland om onderzoek te doen aan de oudste en mooiste Universiteit van niet alleen het gewest Holland, maar ook ver daar buiten totaan de oostgrens bij Nijmegen, de noordgrens bij de Waddeneilanden en de zuidgrens in Vaals?

Honderd jaar later lijken de kansen veel minder groot dan de omliggende problemen die op sociaal vlak opgelost moeten worden. Nederland wordt overheerst door een gevoel van angst voor de toekomst, niet eens zozeer angst voor oorlog, hongersnood of natuurrampen. Maar angst over op welke wijze de mensen, die in deze tijd 60% van de jeugdige samenleving omvatten, zichzelf in stand gaan houden als ze later op eigen benen moeten staan. En met dit voorbeeld doel ik niet eens zo zeer op de hoofdpersoon uit het filmpje, maar mede op de mensen er omheen. Het sociaal en rationeel denken ontgaat deze mensen compleet. Ze staan er niet bij stil dat dit meisje zich zwaar klote voelt en gaan vervolgens door met filmen en grappen maken. Daarnaast ontgaat het totaal dat ze iets kunnen doen om te zorgen dat het meisje er minder last van heeft, bijvoorbeeld zorgen dat ze niet voorover gaat zitten, maar in een open houding en door het aanreiken van water (wat 50% tegenwoordig altijd bij zich draagt) de klachten kunnen verzachten.

Nu vraag ik me af, wie heeft er zo'n sterke vaderlandsliefde dat hij deze mensen in hun latere leven constant wil ondersteunen? Wie denkt dat hij niet eerder zal kiezen om te emigreren wanneer deze misschien wel blijvend beschadigde groep in hun latere leven zwaar trekt aan de merites van anderen.

Mensen die vinden dat dit nu opgelost zou moeten worden raad ik sterk aan om 22 november naar de stembussen te gaan en hun mening te laten horen. Opdat het leven weer net zo kan worden als in 1906, de tijd waarin men voluit zijn creativiteit kon uiten in de dingen waar hij goed in was.
